Merrick talks about node.js including: The conception of node by Ryan Dahl (creator of NodeJS): http://elegantcode.com/2012/02/06/solving-the-upload-progress-bar-problemthe-history-of-node-js/

NODE: What first got Ryan excited about server side stuff was him seeing his first upload progress bar, he was like WTFOMGBBQ.

NODE: Ryan’s first ever demo was presenting his early version of node running a IRC server at JSConf in Berlin, the demo gods taunted him, and he considered fleeing, but also got lucky, and had demo win, people in the audience connected to his simple server, were chatting and then saw it was all from the 400 lines of JS running server-side.

NODE: Joyent (PaaS, IaaS) was in the audience and was like hey we want to build out our infrastructure on this, and Ryan was like well you prob shouldn’t… & they were like, no come to work for us, we’ll pay you to build it.

In this titillating episode we cover pretty much everything you dreamed about last night. Wait, what!? Not that dream you freak! You need professional help!

On another note we had our fan Mike call into the show! We discussed the Carrier IQ disaster alongside other technological tidbits.

Our special guest, Mike, has prepared a collection of links for the show. Please check these links in addition to the ones below!

Carrier IQ disaster, a running log (see updates below short article):
theverge.com/2011/11/30/2601695/carrier-iq-controversy

The wiki:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_IQ

A Carrier IQ press release following the debacle PR.20111212.pdf :
portforwardpodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/PR.20111212.pdf

Al Franken Inquiry & Carrier IQ response breakdown:
engadget.com/2011/12/17/senator-al-franken-asks-about-carrier-iq-the-companies-answer/

How to remove (bottom of article, for Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch):
geek.com/articles/mobile/sprint-orders-all-oems-to-strip-carrier-iq-from-their-hardware-20111216/

Carrier IQ in the iPhone:
electronista.com/articles/11/11/30/carrier.iq.may.have.logging.code.in.ios.too/

…but on in iOS5:
zdnet.com/blog/apple/apple-we-stopped-using-carrier-iq-in-ios-5/11803

From there we touched upon mobile OS’s, an ADD depth onto the awesome PeerBlock software, then moved the discussion to Iran’s jihad (GPS exploit) on our Drone. I’m tired of posting links so if you want more info on the Iran jacking drone lmgtfy.com/?q=Iran+drone. Then I recapped the supposed water utility hack. Finally we got to Ben’s sniffing packets on a local network tutorial.

And then an awesome Zelda rap battle:
kotaku.com/5861006/a-zelda-rap-so-ridiculous-its-amazing

Sam mentions some funny ftp login attempts, I ADD’d onto the awesome backup service Backblaze ($4/month). Then Sam recaps on Eric Reis’s awesome book The Lean Startup. Followed by another tangent into MD5 hashing and why you shouldn’t use it; check your favorite password MD5′d against this database of cracked hashes/passwords distributedmd5.com

Mike mentions the book Hacking Work. I still want to read How To Break Web Software.

An entertaining video is always good advertising:
epipheostudios.com/

Michael Arrington wants you to work for him:
jwz.org/blog/2011/11/watch-a-vc-use-my-name-to-sell-a-con/

Bitcoin Extravaganza, recorded July 12, 2011:

For starters, all knowledge comes from the original Bitcoin Whitepaper:
http://www.bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf
- What is currency vs fiat currency. Why does it matter if currency is rare? Brief history of bartering, banking, fractional reserve banking
- What is Bitcoin? Creator: Satoshi Nakamoto
- Why do Bitcoins have value?
- Describe btc client, what are transactions?
- All transactions are somewhat anonymous, all you give out is your public key
- https://mtgox.com/ last was $14.03
- Describe a block. Hard work done to get hash with leading 0’s. No known shortcut for this work
- Block chain, hashing
- 6 steps of network transactions
- All transactions are public. The block chain provides a Balance Sheet for all nodes in the network
- Chain theoretically grows at 4.2 megs a year but…blk001.dat 327megs, blkindex.dat 166megs
- Currency generated via blocks. Right you pay 50 btc to yourself if you ‘win’ a block by solving the hash. Chance of win = your-cpu / total-network-cpu
- Difficulty is adjusted every 2016 blocks or 2 weeks
- Right now difficulty is 52 bits: (number of 0’s in hex * 4) + top bits on first 0xHEX number) (http://blockexplorer.com/q/hextarget)
- Target money supply such that no more than 21 million coins ever exist. Exponentially decreasing. First 4 years half of the coins ever are minted, next 4 years half of remaining minted. This is done by blocks winning 25, then 12.5 then 6.25 etc. Bitcoin supports fractions of coins up to 6 digits.
- Question: BTCs will invariably become “lost” due to people’s computers crashing, wallet.dat corruption, etc. Over the looong term won’t hundreds of thousands of BTCs be missing? How can they be “replaced” or “replenished?” What about hoarding?
- Bitcoin client no longer can do CPU generation http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=4828.0
- https://freebitcoins.appspot.com/
- Mining pools
- SIDETRACK to CPU vs CPU pipelines
- What is a pipeline?
- Bitcoin Watch (Market Data) http://www.bitcoinwatch.com/
- Bitcoin mining hardware comparison https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
- MaxPC Dream Machine http://tinyurl.com/6g7539r

Attack Vectors on Bitcoin
- There is an infeasible kind of attack. Redo the block chain from the start
- Only kind of attack is spending coins twice, requires forking blockchain from the now. Only possible to work if your-attacking-cpus > total-network-cpu (aka 51%)
- System designed so that the most lucrative way to attack is it to mine
- CANNOT GIVE AWAY OTHER PEOPLES BITCOINS due to public private key signing

Elliptic curve DSA signatures:
http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/fips/fips186-3/fips_186-3.pdf
U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology
See Section (4.7)

SHORT SUMMARY of public private key pairs
x private key
y public key
q and p are primes associated with the pair, g also related
Such math as y = g ^ x mod p

Feedback:
- Intellicache, (listener: Mike Shaw) points out that running a VM totally from RAM is EPIC. Problem is that the poster on reddit is moving VMs into and out of his RAM disk. He relies on dropbox to sync any changes he makes inside these RAM only VMs.
- If you use IntelliCache the RAM drive here could be used to dynamically cache any part of any running virtual machine it will keeping changes persistant to disk. If you shutdown all vm’s, the write caches flush before the VM’s shutdown. All that is left on the RAMdisk is read caches. These can safely be deleted once the machine is off. Rebooting host has same effect.
- Also I wasn’t clear, but my best suggestions for IntelliCache with SSD is to use SSDs for IntelliCache drive and slower spinning disks (aka thumpers) for your backend storage

SSDs:
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/ssd-value-performance,review-1455-5.html

Question?

Do you have a Mac or MacBook that doesn’t have backups? What would you do if you lost all the data on your hard drive?

Answer!

Enter the Perfect Time Machine Server! This lightweight Linux distribution will act as a network Time Machine Server and back up your Mac. This Linux is meant to run on its own computer with no maintenance or hassle. You can even run it inside a Virtual Machine if that suits you. It’s also FREE!

Some Background…

Here I am releasing the first version of my Perfect Time Machine Server! This Linux distribution comes with all the software needed to act as a server for your Mac. It doesn’t have a GUI interface and only runs on the command line. All the steps are easily explained on the introduction screen, so don’t worry if you’re not good at using Linux. You should have a large hard drive to store backups. About 500 gigs will be fine. If your Mac has a large hard drive, you will need to account for that with your backups disk. By default the Perfect Time Machine will use this entire drive for backups. Below you will find the .ISO or virtual machine download.

Instructions

If you’re not sure which version to use, go with the ISO version. Burn it to a CD using a slower burning speed.

Insert CD into your computer and boot.

Login using the username “root”, and password “timemachine”. Type “./help” for instructions or keep reading.

Type “yast” and choose “Miscellanous”. Press tab to highlight “Live Installer” and press enter. Follow the instructions. Reboot.

From your Mac, open a terminal. (Press Command+Space, then type Terminal) Inside the terminal type: “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1″

From your Mac, click on the desktop. Press Command+K. Type in the following, but using the ip of your server: “afp://192.168.1.100″ If you don’t know the ip of your Time Machine Server, type “./help” from the command line. Use the username “tux” and password “linux”

Now that you have connected to the Server, you need to configure Time Machine. Go to System Preferences, and choose Time Machine. Click “Select Disk” and choose the time machine volume.

All done! Your Mac will start backing up automatically.

More Configuration

You will probably want to keep the Time Machine at a fixed IP. To do this, type “Yast” and select “Network Devices” and then choose “Network Settings”. When the page loads press the right arrow key twice. This takes you to the “routing tab” from which you can put in your router’s address. Now tab back to the top and press left twice to get back to Overview. Tab to Edit, and choose “Statically assigned IP Address”. Fill in an fixed IP. You can probably use “255.255.255.0″ for the subnet mask. You can also choose a hostname here.

To configure where backups are stored, edit the symlink in the home directory by typing “nano AppleVolumes.default”. The very last line is an entry for the default share, which is /macbackups Change this line to backup to a different location.

If you have two hard drives, one large and one small, you can still install the Time Machine server. In the installer, mount the larger drive at the mountpoint /macbackups. You can also use a different mount point if you want, just be sure to change the share as.
